Action Audit in Boston - A Week Inside the SmartUp Acceleration Program

In May 2025, I had the opportunity to represent Action Audit in Boston, MA, as part of SmartUp powered by StartSmart CEE, an EU-funded acceleration program designed to help B2B tech companies from Central and Eastern Europe prepare for, and enter, the US market. A few weeks have passed since we came back, which gave me enough distance to put together not just a report on what happened, but also what it actually meant for Action Audit.

The Program: SmartUp powered by StartSmart CEE

SmartUp is a startup acceleration program co-financed by EU funds, built specifically for companies from our region that already have a working product and paying customers, but are only now looking seriously at scaling beyond Europe. Out of a wider pool of applicants, a group of CEE startups, including Action Audit, was selected to take part in a full program covering online mentoring, market analysis and, as the highlight, an on-site study visit to Boston.

Getting this kind of support without giving up equity or taking on debt is not something we take for granted. It let us test our assumptions about the US market in the field, with actual mentors and actual potential customers, rather than guessing from behind a spreadsheet in Poland.

A Week in Boston

We spent a week based around Cambridge and downtown Boston, right in the middle of one of the densest startup ecosystems in the world. Between MIT, Harvard and the cluster of accelerators and coworking spaces around Kendall Square, it is hard to walk more than a few blocks without passing a building that has shaped the tech industry in some way. Most of our sessions took place at the Cambridge Innovation Center, which by itself hosts hundreds of startups under one roof, plus investors, corporate innovation teams and support organizations all mixed together.

Coming from Poland, where the audit and quality management software space is relatively niche, it was refreshing to see how normal it is in Boston to talk about SaaS metrics, churn, or expansion revenue with a stranger over coffee. Everyone speaks the same language, and that alone accelerates a lot of conversations that would take much longer to have back home.

Workshops and Knowledge

The program packed a lot into a short time. We took part in workshops on go-to-market strategy for the US market, SaaS pricing and packaging, and how to structure a pitch for American investors, who, compared to their European counterparts, expect a much faster, much more numbers-driven story. One session on legal and compliance groundwork for US expansion, covering everything from entity structure to data protection expectations, turned out to be far more useful than I expected going in, since it answered several questions we had been putting off for months.

What stuck with me most was a recurring piece of feedback from mentors: American buyers do not want to hear about features, they want to hear about the cost of the problem you solve. It is a small shift in framing, but it changes how we now talk about Action Audit, moving the conversation from "audit software" to "the cost of missed non-conformances."

Meetings and Opportunities

Beyond the group workshops, we had a series of one-on-one mentor sessions with people who had built and sold companies in exactly the kind of B2B software space we operate in. Their feedback on our product and our pitch was direct, sometimes uncomfortably so, but always constructive.

We also had the chance to talk with representatives of local manufacturing and hospitality businesses, the same industries where Action Audit already has a strong footing in Europe, and with a few corporate innovation scouts looking for exactly this kind of operational software. None of these conversations turned into signed contracts overnight, of course, but several of them are still ongoing, and one or two look like genuine leads worth following up on in the coming months.

Reflections

If I had to summarize the biggest difference between doing business in Boston and doing business at home, it would be pace and directness. Meetings started on time, questions were asked bluntly, and decisions, even small ones, were made in the room rather than postponed to "someone will get back to you." It is a style that took a day or two to adjust to, but one I ended up appreciating.

It was also validating to hear, more than once, that the simplicity of Action Audit, being able to run an audit from a phone in the middle of a production line, without training or a manual, is exactly the kind of product American SMBs are looking for. We already knew this was our strength in Europe. Hearing it independently confirmed by people with no reason to flatter us was a good sign.

Summary

A week is not a long time, but between the workshops, the mentor sessions and the countless informal conversations in hallways and coffee shops, we came back with a much clearer picture of what it would take for Action Audit to succeed in the US, and with a handful of contacts we intend to keep working on. None of this would have been possible without the EU funding behind SmartUp powered by StartSmart CEE, and I am grateful to the organizers and mentors who made the Boston leg of the program as valuable as it was.
